Sothebys had a successful sale with some major prices achieved.
Andy Warhol was the top artist followed by Basquiat, Rothko, De Kooning, Joan Mitchell and many other American contemporary artists.
Sothebys sold contemporary art worth 189 million dollars.
Andy Warhola sold the most and the best at 32 million dollars, closely followed by Mark Rothko with a 31 million sale. Brice Marten and Pollock sold close to 10 million dollars. Cattalan and Basquiat sold close to eight million dollars.
Joan Mitchell, Lichtenstein, Munoz, De Kooning and Calder sold for 4-5 millin dollars.
All in all the evening sale was very good and it suggests good health in the art market. Taking into account the offer and the prices, I must say that the market is very healthy and ready to take off spectacularly in the coming months and year.
Christies Contemporary Art Sale was even more impressive with 232 million sold
Jasper Johns stole the show with his Flag selling at 28.5 million and confirming the view that contemporary art is thriving and much better should be expected. With a total sold for their evening sale of 232 million, this was a very good sale. Add to that another sixty million for the day sale of contemporary art and all in all Christies went very well and surpassed Sothebys total sold.
When New York is confident and booming the rest of the world takes notice and things move forward for sure.
