I referred to the Antiques Gazette earlier. I mentioned how invaluable a tool it was in the 1980s and 1990s and until the internet put a spanner in the works of a lot of businesses, including buying and selling art quickly. I was always anxious for the gazettee to come in order to read the new sales reports and see the new ads for auctions and sales.

The Greek Government Is Struggling But…
Vergos auction started the spring series of Greek Art sales and the result was fine.
It was only 60% sold, which is low for any Greek sale, but under the circumstances it was good and in some cases very good. Once again the Greek art lovers and money holders, I hasten to add, spent money to buy good art of the past and promising art of the future.

Never regret about what you did, regret about what you did not do!
The following day after the Hoffman sale I booked a ticket to San Francisco with one of the cheapest airlines around. It cost about 500.00 dollars to fly west but then again, I did not want comforts, I wanted safety and quick flights. They were the only ones to offer what I needed from Newark. The major airlines did not offer what I needed on the day in question.

By October 1986 I had made several plans related to paintings and trips. The Montezin painting remained unsold in early October in New York. I made a couple of sales and collected enough money for another couple of purchases and so I decided to attend the auction in New York first. Then if everything went according to plan, I wanted to carry on to San Francisco in order to attend the auction at Butterfields.

The scene for the Turkish Auctions has been set already. A few years back it was mainly the works of Hamdi Bey that made the headlines. It was 19th century European content paintings that achieved prices in the hundreds of thousands of pounds.
