Merchant Ship In Rough Seas
70 x 100 cm
Painted 1975
Provenance: Bought directly from the artist
Painted in 1975-76
Kalogeropoulos painted with his heart and his soul the sea, the ship and the skies. This is one of the most evocative paintings of the artist. The sea has been painted with exquisite skill and absolute magical colours of all shades of blue. The waves are manically beating each other, the ship is travelling unconcerened and the clouds are warning the travellers of an impending storm. Yet, the ship is so cleverly placed in the distance in order to emphasize the importance of the wave and the sea.

The examination of Kalogeropoulos’ ouvre reveals a thoughtful, knowledgeable and sensitive person who took his art seriously, who worked laboriously and hard to deliver masterpieces of some quality and integrity.

Mastoras studied at the Vakalo School of Art but No studying makes an artist, unless he has the talent that nature bestowed upon him. Mastoras is clearly an artist with natural talent in both his still life work and figurative paintings. Unfortunately of the ten works in our collection only two are left and we consider them of very high quality. Still Life with Peaches was purchased in 1989 and was considered by the artist as one of his best paintings ever. The Still Life of Flowers was painted in 1990, especially for our collection. Both works remain high in our stock, they are considered treasures in view of the value and prices achieved by the artist in Athens today.

Lots Sold : 75 or 62.5 %
Total sold: 170,000 Euros
The auction of Psatharis in Cyprus has managed within the last two years to put Cypriot artists on the map of art sales and create a new, small market for Greek art. Never too ambitious, always down to earth, the management of the auction once again has put together a good group of paintings to suit the lower end of the Greek market. There is a good mix of Cypriot artists with a number of mainland Greek artists.

May saw the two biannual Greek art sales take place in London. The worst was expected but the market was anything but bad. It was actually very good and the prices achieved were indicative of this strong market.
