Sothebys hold the lead in sales money at present but more is to happen in this market. Bonhams are hot on their heels and we are not sure whether Christies will stay for long outside the dance of millions in the Greek market. While the main bulk of the important Greek paintings are sold in London through Sothebys and Bonhams and occasionally Christies, Vergos Auctions in Athens do make business of considerable importance and have Greek art sales twice a year, that merit mention. Smaller auctions offering just Greek Art operate in Athens but their practices are unknown. The one auction we seem to get honest and transparent working ethos is Psatharis Auctions in Cyprus. They offer mainly Greek Cypriot artists together with mainland Greek artists. Their auction on 29th April yielded 170,000 Euros for 55 works sold out of 85 on offer. This is a small auction house with barely two years of auction history but they know their business and they seem to be honest and genuine plus trustworthy. |
